When a product requires lightweight construction, visual appeal, cost-efficiency, and functionality, the right manufacturing method makes all the difference. Thermoforming, also known as vacuum forming, and compression molding, also referred to as thermopressing, provide versatile possibilities for products across multiple industries. Especially when the goal is to combine technical performance, high-quality appearance, and efficient production.

Everything starts with the right manufacturing method

Product performance is not determined by material choices alone. The manufacturing method also has a major impact on weight, appearance, acoustic performance, costs, and production flexibility.

At Volar Plastic, several forming technologies are utilized to meet different customer needs. In this article, we focus on two solutions: thermoforming (vacuum forming) and compression molding (thermopressing).

Thermoforming and vacuum forming – freedom for design

In thermoforming, or vacuum forming, a heated plastic sheet is shaped over a mold using vacuum pressure to achieve the desired form. The method is suitable for a wide variety of products and production volumes – from individual prototypes to large-scale series production.

“Thermoforming is often a surprisingly competitive alternative – especially when a high-quality result is needed without heavy investments in tooling.”

Why choose thermoforming? Here are some of the key benefits of vacuum forming and thermoforming.

• Lightweight structures. Parts produced with thermoforming are lightweight yet durable. In transportation and end-use applications, every kilogram saved matters.

• High-quality appearance. Modern shapes and premium surface finishes are created directly during the manufacturing process – without additional finishing stages.

• Cost-efficiency in small and medium production series .Tooling costs remain moderate, making the method particularly attractive when production volumes vary.

• Flexibility. Solutions can be tailored according to the application. The same manufacturing method works well for components of different sizes and industries. Modifications to trimming or openings can also be made easily by updating the cutting program.

• Sustainability. Recyclable materials and material-efficient manufacturing are possible without compromising quality.

Compression molding and thermopressing – acoustics and visual quality in one process

In compression molding, also known as thermopressing, the material is shaped using heat and pressure into a finished component with a refined surface and structure directly from the mold. No separate upholstery or surface treatment is required.

The method is particularly suitable for applications where the product must both look good and improve comfort – for example by reducing noise.

“With compression molding, visual quality and acoustic performance are created in the same process step. This significantly simplifies production.”

Key benefits of compression molding and thermopressing:

• Lightweight structure

• Excellent sound absorption properties – a major advantage in vehicle interiors and other interior applications

• Finished surface directly from the mold without separate upholstery stages

• Cost-efficient overall solution

• Versatile design and material options

In many applications, compression molding can replace a structure that would otherwise require a separate frame material, adhesive layer, and upholstery – turning a three-step process into one.

Volar – one partner, multiple manufacturing solutions

In many projects, the best end result is achieved by combining several manufacturing methods. In addition to thermoforming and compression molding, Volar’s production technologies also include soft and rigid PUR casting as well as composite applications. Volar has extensive experience in complete solutions where different technologies complement each other.

For customers, this means:

• One point of contact instead of multiple suppliers

• Smoother project management

• More efficient production

• Better-performing end products

“Technical expertise is important, but equally important is the customer’s ability to rely on deliveries, quality, and long-term cooperation.”

Volar’s operations are based on certified quality systems and responsible manufacturing practices. For customers, this means reliable deliveries, consistent quality, and long-term partnership.

The right solution is built together

Every product and application is different – which is why manufacturing solutions should always be designed case by case.

Contact our sales team and tell us about your product requirements. Together, we will find the manufacturing method that best fits your needs.
